Not today, next: Thursday, August 21st

Wow, Clinton sure does have a packed schedule in Florida on Thursday (see it in the extended entry) on behalf of Obama. Makes Maureen Dowd look stupid.

There was a big Bayh boon earlier today that got shot down.

Biden took a successful dump.

Dana Goldstein revels with anticipation in watching the furitive reactions to a Sebelius nod. How unity of Dana.

Late last night, did I really predict that Daschle would be the VP?

Obama is in VA today stumping with Warner, and tomorrow, he's doing a town hall event with Kaine, with reports that Obama is spending the night in Richmond.

The good thing is that its now less than 48 hours till you will know.

It elevates his stature with the home crowd to be seen as a short-list finalist, even if he doesn't get the pick.

I am sure he'll have more opportunities to campaign with Obama in Indiana anyway.

Now he better cough up some more money to the DSCC. He's sitting on more than $10 million. He could afford to give a few hundred thousand at the very least.

Re: Anyone feel bad for Bayh? (none / 0)

I don't have anything against Bayh other than he isn't Hillary Clinton.

For all the lessor knowns, and even the previous presidential contenders the VP isn't the springboard that it would be for Hillary who already has a large  faction of solid support.

They aren't losing out on a shoe in for president in 2016.

Hillary as VP isn't about attaining a position its about maintaining that position.  Currently Hillary is ~1% from being the nominee and being VP would let her keep that position until the next opportunity to run.

None of the others have that position to maintain.

Re: Not today, next: Thursday, August 21st (2.00 / 1)

In all seriousness, it's important for Clinton to step in front of this. Every bit as important as Obama stepping up to McCain's attacks. Just because she's not in the race doesn't mean she won't be attacked. She's waited too long to bring her people in line, and if she thinks that she will be absolved of any responsibility for not doing so, she's wrong. Either she kills these groups in person at the convention or she will bear responsibility for them.

I said back when these people weren't stuck in their vacuum that Hillary's chances for coming out as strong or stronger depended on throwing her full weight behind Obama (I didn't mention Bill in that, but I'd say it applies to him as well). Hillary's negatives have always stemmed from the sort of stuff Dowd is pushing. She needs to start addressing the unity stuff in the media and start condemning the people who are acting out in her name.

She also needs to tell Bill to quit playing the "McCain more qualified" card. If she intends to run in 2012, it's only to her benefit to weaken him as much as she can now.

See, that's the kind of thinking that will get her in trouble. Obama doesn't actually owe her very much, it's simply that it is to her benefit to help him out very publicly.

But I said before that I think he owes her an offer for the VP spot. And if so, she owes us to either take it or be more honest about the fact that she didn't want it.

can someone tell me why are people supposed to get excited about Tim Kaine (he with the now infamous arched eyebrow rebuttal) or Sebelius. Barring that they have been Obama loyalists from the beginning and hence needs to be rewarded by the buddy act did they ever till now act as proper surrogate? Did they ever come out swinging for the Democratic party? Choosing either one of them will be anti-climactic and a poor VP choice if indeed the VP i supposed to be the attack dog. Re: Not today, next: Thursday, August 21st (none / 0)

Obama was once described as "hiding in plain sight", but now he's toying with everyone. He's flirting so much with Biden, Bayh and Kaine that I don't think it's any of the three. Sebelius' movements seem to rule her out. I think it's someone the MSM has not been talking about for a while. And Obama may have a very big surprise in store.

by RandyMI on Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 06:39:06 PM EST

Re: Not today, next: Thursday, August 21st (none / 0)

Yea, that much is obvious. I was doing some searching around a couple of days ago and came across an article stating that it was down to Kaine, Bayh, Biden, and this was from late July. Obviously, they planted that early, and are sticking to it. It won't be either of those three... and they know it.

Biden knows that its a toy, and is having some fun. Bayh is awkward about it, but has gotten the hang of it. Kaine is playing right along and laughing big about it with Obama.

Make this an open thread? Might as well be. I want somewhere to talk about Cindy McCain lying about Mother Theresa. Do we FINALLY have enough to start pushing the idea that the McCains like to stretch the truth? If Al Gore was ridiculous for his (not entirely unplausible) claim that he and Tipper were the inspiration for Love Story, I think claiming to have a personal encounter with Mother Theresa (no matter how nice the sentiment) qualifies as at least unnerving.

Why do the McCains seemingly feel the need to embellish the truth on matters that are already fairly moving on their own? I don't know, but I think that there's more to be found.

Re: Not today, next: Thursday, August 21st (none / 0)

Maureen Dowd doesn't even have to break a sweat to look stupid- I found this quote in one of her articles from Obama's trip overseas:

Barack Obama wrinkles.

Just slightly, and just when he has to wear a flak jacket over his blue oxford shirt.

The media behemoth slouching after the senator is scouring his every word, expression, bead of sweat, basketball shot and accessory -- are those hiking boots too Bremer? Are the sunglasses too rapper? Will he leave enough time for his glittery groupie, Carla Bruni? -- for hints of imperfection that would foretell lacunae in presidential judgment.

The One, as McCain aides sardonically call Obama, glided through Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan, girding his messianic loins for the inevitable kvetching he would face in Israel as skeptical Jews "try to get a better sense of what's in Obama's kishkes." So said Nathan Diament of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, in The Daily News, defining "kishkes" as Yiddish for gut.

EWWW.

Most people are under the assumption that the VP choice had not been made a long time ago by Obama and his folks , I personally believe he had made his choice a good while ago and all of this talk about people rising and falling in speculations based on events are just that mere speculation.

I believe he has picked Bayh a good while ago.

In my opinion Hillary Clinton was ruled out a long time ago.

Lori, lori (none / 0)

Bayh's chances aren't looking so good right now; the left wing completely went nuts on him as if he were Sam Alito.  Why did the Obama folks go out of their way to step on the idea that he was going to be in Indiana on Saturday?  Obama's crew seems to like stories hanging out there for the effect.

You called Dayton, Ohio as the location so I suspect you may end up being validated on both of these picks.

I haven't seen any of the Obama folks step on the news out there about the indiana thing , what I read was that an " aide " whose name wasn't even mentioned said it wasn't true.

Thats not really a denial.

Obama would make a mix of electoral , message and experience pick and that choice is Bayh in my view.

Note I am not a big Bayh advocate , although I think he is a decent guy but I don't see anyone else out there and I believe he has made the pick a good while a go despite the breathless speculations.

The Bayh boon was felt on the betting markets. It's been amusing to follow. I'm not involved.

Biden was trading at 50% then it plummeted to 36% while Bayh soared a similar amount. He was nearly even with Biden at one point. That was a few hours ago. Now it's steadied with Biden at 41 and Bayh at 20, last time I checked.

Indianapolis? (none / 0)

CBS news is reporting that a rally has been scheduled for Indianapolis on Saturday, the same day as the Springfield event.  The Obama campaign isn't confirmong or denying this report.

If Bayh is the pick, this would make sense.  If they stop in Indianapolis first, they could stop in Evan Bayh's birthplace of Shirkieville (which is just northwest of Terre Haute on the Indiana/Illinois line), or they could stop there on their way from Springfield.

Of course, this is rampant speculation.
